Perhaps you’ve never considered a career in the logistics industry, or heard of a Logistics Sales Executive (LSE)–but working as an LSE in this industry can be a very rewarding and lucrative career. Even if you don’t have specific experience in logistics sales, many other careers provide transferrable skills for this position. We have team members who have worked in a variety of other industries, including Sales, Gaming and Hospitality, Marketing, Manufacturing, and even Collegiate Athletics—who are very successful at ITS. We recently interviewed some of our employees who came from other industries about how their previous work experience has translated to their current position and helped them succeed in logistics.

“Prior to coming to ITS Logistics, I was a Director of Academic Services for student-athletes at the University of Nevada. I had no experience in logistics or transportation, but some of the skills and experience that I gained in my position at the University have really helped me succeed at ITS. Some of the most important skills that I have carried with me are patience and problem-solving which I used in mentoring student-athletes. My mindset is there is always a solution for whatever challenge is put in front of you, and my previous experience has allowed me to confidently take on these new situations. I have learned that one of the bigger challenges, as you progress within your career, is managing people. My previous experience in managing people and mentoring students has allowed me to take on more roles and responsibilities and move into a leadership position. Something I’ve learned throughout this transition is that people learn and progress in their own unique ways and it might not be the same as you, so it’s really important to identify that and then find the best ways to reach each of your individual team members so they can be their best.”

ITS Logistics employee Meagan Reece

“My previous work experience has been instrumental to my success in the logistics field. Having worked in both US-outbound corporate immigration and supply chain management before joining ITS equipped me with a pre-built foundation that gave me the tools to be able to dive in headfirst! From high-level skills like managing client expectations and relationships, close attention to detail, and pivoting quickly between varied tasks, to working-level basics such as Outlook email management and Excel expertise, my experience has translated across fields and has given me a unique leg-up when it comes to learning and finding success in this industry. I believe that people with non-logistics work experience bring a fresh eye to the field and can leverage that experience to think of new ways to manage daily workloads and can make a positive impact here at ITS!”

“Critical thinking is a key skill that has translated from my previous work experience and really helped me in challenging situations. People entering this industry need to understand that things don’t always go according to plan. It’s about how you adapt and find solutions to challenges in the moment that will lead to your success. Having prior job experience where you faced adversity is a huge asset and will definitely help you manage challenges, stress, and a variety of other situations better.”

“Before coming to ITS Logistics I worked in the construction industry straight out of college. I didn’t have any experience in logistics, but I feel that I was able to bring the core skills from my previous role in the construction realm to my new role here at ITS including a strong work ethic, commitment to culture, passion in seeing long term results and attention to detail. ITS absolutely provides you with the tools and training to be successful and is a perfect place for individuals who are ready to work hard, have fun, and commit to our high energy culture!”

“The transportation industry is like no other industry I have ever been a part of. It allows you so many avenues to work from and it fits a wide range of individual skill sets and personalities. It gives you the opportunity to reach levels of management, leadership and operations and each level brings its own excitement, enthusiasm, fun and very competitive compensation. I personally had no experience in transportation but have found success with previous work experience in sales and training in the hospitality industry and leadership from my time in real estate. The strengths of being able to build relationships, train others and take part in leadership initiatives really helps you grow and gain respect from your peers. Anyone with the drive to work hard and willingness to learn—regardless of previous experience—will find success in this industry.”
