ITS Logistics is helping Safe Embrace meet the needs of children impacted by the increase in domestic abuse in Northern Nevada during the COVID-19 crisis by supporting their Kids Klub program.

Children staying in the Safe Embrace shelter have already lost their homes, their clothes, their toys, and their sense of normalcy. With COVID-19, they have also lost the routine and safety that going to school provided to them. Safe Embrace’s Kids Klub brings a little of that normalcy back to their lives.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a global day of giving and unity, set to take place on May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. The day is designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world. Safe Embrace is asking for donations for their Kids Klub program on this day of giving.

Safe Embrace is helping more victims than ever before while also experiencing a decrease in funding. The services they offer to our community are vital and lifesaving in their own way. Safe Embrace needs your support on Giving Tuesday. Funds raised will go to the Kids Klub program so the children staying in the shelter can always have a safe and comfortable place to heal from the trauma they experienced.

ITS Logistics will match up to $3,000 in Giving Tuesday donations so that together we can help more children and families escape, heal and thrive. To join ITS Logistics in supporting Safe Embrace, please visit www.SafeEmbrace.org to donate.

“With the COVID-19 pandemic causing such a dramatic increase in domestic violence and child abuse, the resources that Safe Embrace provides our community are more important than ever,” said Patrick McFarland, Director of Marketing at ITS Logistics. “We’re humbled to be able to help them during this crisis and we’d like to challenge other businesses and philanthropists to join as well.”

When domestic violence increases, so does child abuse and neglect. Safe Embrace has seen a 400% increase in requests for services since COVID-19 began. Many of the victims they serve have multiple children which means there are often more children staying in the shelter than adults. Kids come to the shelter with their own forms of trauma which is why the Kids Klub program is so important. This program helps children work through their trauma and learn coping skills. It is where they can decompress, play and just be kids.

“Kids already get the short end of the stick in situations with domestic abuse. Their birthdays get forgotten. We have kids come to the shelter without shoes or clothes that fit. They are afraid and scared,” said Jessica Cisneros, Executive Director of Safe Embrace.

“In the Kids Klub, we play with kids to promote physical and mental health in a non-traditional classroom setting. We talk to them and allow them to talk to us. We celebrate their birthdays and make holidays special. We give them shoes and clothes and toys and make sure they feel safe and well fed. We teach them coping skills in Kids Klub and talk about healthy boundaries and healthy relationships in an effort to end the cycle of violence,” said Cisneros.

Why Safe Embrace Needs Donations

One of the difficult things we have recognized about the Kids Klub is that it is geared toward young children. Youth and teens are impacted in different ways by domestic abuse. With COVID-19 keeping them out of school and in the shelter, we have to find new ways to engage with them and need to make the space more welcoming to all in an age neutral way. Kids who are exposed to domestic violence have a high risk of becoming a perpetrator. There does not have to be a cycle of violence – things can change. That is why the Kids Klub program is so important to the work we do.”

Safe Embrace wants to raise $15,000 on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 during the #GivingTuesdayNow campaign. The funds will be used to update Kids Klub. The large room needs a major overhaul from its current preschool feel to one that feels more like a home. The funds will be used to purchase new computers and technology used for programming and to purchase new education and therapy materials. The room will also receive a much-needed makeover to make it welcoming to older kids and teens. New paint, flooring, storage and furniture will make the room feel more like a comfortable family room.
