Businesses Help Katrina Victims - 01-01-2007

More Northern Nevada companies are coming out with efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina with money, services, and time.

Last week, we had received a small number of items.

But once we ran a column on Monday asking for companies to let us know of their efforts and challenging businesses which hadn't contributed to rethink the worthiness of the cause, many more releases have arrived. In fact, by 8 a.m. Monday, we already had received another two dozen; many more followed.

For example, ITS Logistics of Sparks has three major efforts taking place, said Vice President Darryl Bader.

First, it provided financial support, equipment and fuel to a family from Biloxi, Miss., whose home was destroyed. The family has relatives in the Reno-Sparks area and ITS is in the process of helping the victims relocate themselves and the few belongings they were able to save to Reno-Sparks.

Second, ITS has worked with various Reno-Sparks businesses and local law enforcement to collect a 53-foot truckload of food stuff, clothing, tools and other items to support local law enforcement operation in communities devastated by Katrina. The Reno Police Department provided two officers with commercial driver's licenses who left from ITS in Sparks last Sunday morning driving the tractor-trailer on its four-day, 4,334 mile round-trip to deliver the supplies to the Mississippi Fraternal Order of Police.

Finally, ITS challenged all employees to donate to the Red Cross, with the company matching the total contribution.
